Cocodrie, Louisiana is one of the most productive fishing destinations in the entire Gulf Coast — but knowing when to go makes all the difference. Whether you're chasing speckled trout, redfish, flounder, or heading offshore for snapper and amberjack, each season brings its own opportunities. Here's your complete guide to fishing Cocodrie month by month.
Spring Fishing in Cocodrie (March – May)
Spring is arguably the best all-around fishing season in Cocodrie. Water temperatures warm from the mid-50s into the low 70s, which triggers aggressive feeding behavior across almost every species.
Speckled trout move into the shallow flats and grass beds as early as March, making for some of the most exciting inshore action of the year. Live shrimp under a popping cork, or soft plastics on a quarter-ounce jig head, are hard to beat. Redfish are also extremely active in the marsh ponds and shorelines through April and May — look for tailing reds in the early morning hours.
Offshore fishing picks up significantly by late April as water temperatures stabilize. Red snapper season typically opens in June, but yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi start showing in the deep water by May. From Pelican's View Lodge, you're just a short boat ride from the launch, putting you ahead of the crowds and in the water faster.
Summer Fishing in Cocodrie (June – August)
Summer brings heat, but it also brings some of the best offshore fishing of the year. Red snapper season is in full swing, and limits come quickly when you're on the right structure. Vermilion snapper, grouper, and amberjack round out the offshore menu.
Inshore, speckled trout fishing is best in the early morning before the heat sets in. Target deeper holes, shaded dock pilings, and areas with current flow. Flounder start showing up along the sandy bottom transitions by July and August — a species that's often overlooked but absolutely delicious on the dinner table.
Pro tip: Leave the dock at first light in summer. By 9am the sun is punishing and the bite slows. An early start from Pelican's View Lodge means you're rigged and on the water before the competition even has their coffee.
Fall Fishing in Cocodrie (September – November)
Fall is when Cocodrie absolutely lights up. Cooling water temperatures trigger feeding frenzies as fish bulk up for winter. September and October offer some of the hottest speckled trout action of the year, with fish stacking up in the bays and passes.
Redfish run in large schools along the shorelines and through the cuts in October and November — this is what Louisiana anglers live for. It's not uncommon to sight cast to pods of 20 to 30 reds pushing through the marsh. Bring topwater lures for an experience you won't forget.
Duck hunting season also opens in the fall, and Cocodrie sits in the heart of some of the best waterfowl habitat in Louisiana. Many of our guests combine a morning duck hunt with an afternoon fishing trip — the ultimate South Louisiana outdoor experience.
Winter Fishing in Cocodrie (December – February)
Don't sleep on winter fishing in South Louisiana. While the crowds thin out, the fishing can be excellent. Speckled trout school up in deep holes and bayou channels to escape the cold, and when you find them — you find numbers. Slow-rolling a jig along the bottom is the go-to technique.
Sheepshead become a primary target in winter, especially around dock pilings, jetties, and oyster beds. They're one of the best-eating fish in the Gulf and put up a surprisingly strong fight. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice.
