In Cocodrie, "just going fishing" is a great way to burn gas. To actually put meat in the box, you have to understand that our fish move with the salinity and the bait. Here’s the "shortlist" of spots near Pelican’s View Lodge that offer the most consistent action in Terrebonne Parish.

1. The "Wreckage" at Whiskey Pass

  • The Target: Big Speckled Trout and Bull Reds.

  • The Intel: Located between Whiskey Island and Trinity Island, this is a major "highway" for fish moving from the Gulf into the bays.

  • How to Fish It: Look for the deeper troughs and submerged structures. In the spring and summer, drift the beach side of the islands with croakers or topwater plugs (Spook Jr. is a local favorite). Caution: Watch your depth finder; the sandbars here shift after every major storm.

2. The "Motor-Buster" Sunken Barge (Caillou Lake)

  • The Target: Monster Redfish and Black Drum.

  • The Intel: Near the "Red 4" marker on the east side of Grand Bayou Dularge, there’s a sunken barge that acts as a magnet for predators.

  • How to Fish It: This spot is nicknamed for a reason—it’s an outboard's nightmare. Approach with extreme caution. Anchor up-current and toss cracked crab or live shrimp right against the structure. If you’re not getting hung up occasionally, you’re not close enough.

3. Moss Bay & The "Treacherous" Oyster Reefs

  • The Target: Slot Reds and "Yellowmouth" Trout.

  • The Intel: Southwest of Pointe Cocodrie, Moss Bay has more oyster reefs than almost any other bay in the area. Most casual boaters avoid it because it’s shallow and hazardous.

  • How to Fish It: This is prime "trolling motor" territory. Work the edges of the shell mounds. The hazard is exactly why the fish stay there—they aren't being pressured by every weekend warrior with a bay boat.

4. The Last Island (Isles Dernieres) Barrier Chain

  • The Target: The "Grand Slam" (Trout, Redfish, Flounder).

  • The Intel: Specifically Raccoon Island and Wine Island. These are the frontline of the Gulf.

  • How to Fish It: When the winds are calm (North or light South), wade-fishing the surf here is world-class. If you're staying in the boat, target the "cuts" where the tide rips through the islands. These are ambush points where big trout wait for bait to get pushed through.

5. Lake Barre & The "Update" Rigs

  • The Target: Consistent Speckled Trout.

  • The Intel: Lake Barre is famous for its platform fishing. While many of the old "big rigs" are being removed, the remaining wellheads and "shell pads" (where rigs used to be) still hold massive amounts of fish.

  • How to Fish It: Use a "rig hook" instead of an anchor to stay on the structure without getting snagged. Use a sliding sinker rig (Carolina rig) with live shrimp to reach the trout holding deep near the pilings.

Three "Pro" Rules for Chauvin Anglers:

  1. Don’t ignore the "Drains": When the tide is falling, find a small marsh cut emptying into a larger bayou. Park your boat and cast into the mouth. The marsh is essentially "flushing" the bait out to the predators.

  2. The "Bird" Myth: Diving gulls are great, but "hovering" terns are better. Terns are more precise—if they are hovering and dipping, they are over trout. If gulls are screaming and diving everywhere, it’s often just ladyfish or bluefish.

  3. Salinity is King: If it’s been raining for a week, the "inside" lakes (like Lake Boudreaux) will be too fresh. Move south toward the islands to find the salt.

Your Base Camp on Edgewater Drive

Pelican’s View Lodge was built by people who fish these exact coordinates. We have the trailer parking you need, the private launch to get you out early, and the deck space to talk about the ones you caught (and the ones you didn't).
